Your safety is our priority while travelling on our trains and whilst at our stations. Please take a few moments to familiarise yourself with this information to ensure that your journey is trouble free.

At the station

Take care when using stairways, escalators and bridges, particularly in cold or wet weather when conditions may be slippery.Never leave belongings unattended as this may cause a security alert.

Do not go on to the track for any reason. Use footbridges, subways or other crossing means to cross the tracks. If you drop any personal belongings onto the track, inform a member of staff or use the Help Point to ask for help.

Always remain behind the yellow warning line on platforms and ensure that prams, pushchairs and small children are securely held as certain trains pass through at high speed.

Boarding and leaving

When boarding and alighting from trains, please take care as there may be a gap between the train and the platform edge.

Many of our trains have power operated doors. These are closed up to 40 seconds before departure. Never attempt to board the train when the warning signal is sounding and the doors are about to close. Do not prevent the doors from closing.

Our High Speed Trains and certain other trains have manual doors that are electronically locked when the train is in motion. Orange lights on the side of each coach are lit when the doors are released for opening.

If you are the last person to board or leave the train, please close the door and windows securely behind you. When on board, do not lean out of the window while the train is in motion. When the train has come to a stand in the station, lower the window and use the external handle to open the door. Please check that the train has stopped next to a platform and step carefully off.

On board our trains

We display safety information in all our trains. Safety information can be found on posters located near doorways in our trains. This contains actions to be taken in the event of an emergency along with details of where safety equipment is located.

Keeping safe in an emergency

If there is an immediate threat to life it may be necessary to set off the emergency alarm which wil alert the train staff and bring the train to a stand. All our trains carry light sticks for use if the lighting fails. Locations of light sticks and emergency alarms can be found in the on-board safety information.

In the unlikely event of an emergency, please follow these guidelines:
  • Remain on board the train, moving to another carriage if necessary. Do not take personal belongings with you;
  • If it is not safe to remain on board, once the train is stationary, exit through the coach doors. All doors have an emergency release system.
  • Before you leave the train be aware of any moving trains and potential hazards. Do not take personal belongings with you;
  • Move to a safe location once off the train, away from the tracks, and await instructions from the train staff. Do not step on, or touch any rail or stray wire.

Personal Safety

Our staff are always happy to help. If you cannot find someone to speak to, all our stations have Help Points where you can get information and also report any suspiscious behaviour or emergencies.

Mast of our trains have closed-circuit television (CCTV) to ensure a safer environment for both our customers and our staff.
