Housed in an 18th century Real Tennis court, this independent and delightful 'Museum of Bath's working heritage since Roman times' depicts the development of Bath as a retailing and manufacturing centre and, since the 17th century, as a tourist and health resort. There are three floors of displays for the whole family including the landscape of industrial Bath and exact reconstructions of factories and workshops.
The museum offers access to a world-class collection of art and artefacts from the Far East, including ceramics, metalware, bamboo carvings and one of the most comprehensive Chinese jade collections in the UK. New exhibitions change on a regular basis, along with an exciting calendar of events, every three to four months. It is a destination for everyone from the scholar of Asian Art to the curious visitor.
Created in the 18th century by local entrepeneur Ralph Allen, with advice from 'Capability' Brown and the poet Alexander Pope, the garden is set in a sweeping valley with magnificent views over Bath. There are many interesting features, including the majestic Palladian Bridge, one of only four in the world.
