Refreshed High Speed Trains

Following the launch of our Refresh programme in January 2007 our new look High Speed Trains (HSTs) have been rolled out across the First Great Western network.

As a result of working closely with industry professionals, staff and our customers we have created an exciting new product providing a more comfortable, stylish and contemporary environment with facilities available to suit all customers.

The complete overhaul of fleet interiors was part of a £63 million Refresh programme of the 53 HSTs, and the result of more than two years design work by ex-Porsche and Eurostar designer, Michael Rodber.

The Refresh has radically transformed the interior of our HSTs with new standard seats designed to encourage comfortable posture and provide extra legroom.  Power points for laptop and mobiles are located between seats and improved lighting and new toilets have been fitted throughout.

The onboard catering facilities range from the new Express Café to our onboard restaurant serving meals created with locally sourced ingredients.* First Class passengers now benefit from full leather reclining seats (a first for a UK train operator) with two power points at table level. Enjoy the new First Class luxury and travel in style with at seat service provided by the onboard First Class Host.

In addition to these features hooks for jackets are available in Standard and First, emergency lighting and new carpets have been installed throughout with improved disabled facilities including two wheelchair spaces in coach E and priority seats with extra legroom in each standard carriage.

To complete the Refresh of our HST fleet the HST locomotives (power cars) have undergone a major £80 million modernisation programme. New diesel engines will not only increase reliability, but will reduce Co2 emissions by 64%.
