The Regatta Line
Explore the River Thames by train using The Regatta Line.
This picturesque line runs alongside the River Thames through the Chilterns countryside as it meanders its way between Twyford and Henley-on-Thames, stopping at Wargrave and Shiplake.
Henley-on-Thames is a picturesque market town on the edge of the Chiltern Hills and the banks of the River Thames.
The town is regarded as the spiritual home of rowing and today is best known for the annual Royal Regatta that has been taking place since 1839 and is considered a highlight of the British social calendar. Henley is less than hour west of London by train and has much to offer and attracts visitors all year round.
First Great Western run frequent train services to Henley. Plan your journey and buy train tickets online here.
The award-winning River and Rowing Museum is a short walk from the railway station, and here you can relive Kenneth Graeme’s much-loved story, The Wind in the Willows, in a spectacular walk-through attraction. There are ample opportunities for ‘messing about on the river’. From April to September, jazz and wildlife cruises, short round trips or longer trips to Reading, Marlow and Windsor are all available, complete with opportunities to hire small rowing and motorboats by the hour or day.
Away from the river, the town is known for its collection of art galleries and variety of shops specialising in antiques, rare books, gifts and good food as well as fashion, shoe, jewellery, gift and interior boutiques. This makes the area an ideal destination for a day trip or long weekend away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The village of Shiplake can be found alongside the River Thames, about two miles upstream from Henley-on-Thames, on the west bank of the river. Jerome K. Jerome (1895-1927) mentioned the village in his book "Three Men in a Boat" and the author George Orwell (who wrote “Animal Farm” and “1984”) lived here as a child.
Both Henley-on-Thames and Shiplake are located on the Thames Path, one of only 15 National Trails in England and Wales, which offers a chance to enjoy the surrounding countryside. It is possible to walk along the river between these two stations.
